About this studio
West Coast Swing Madrid promotes this partner dance across the Madrid community. West Coast Swing originates from the US west coast in the 1930s—it's the official dance of California—and has since spread worldwide, with particular strength in France, the UK, Russia and Poland. In Spain it remains less known than salsa or bachata, but the community here is active and growing.
The dance itself has roots in lindy hop and is danced in a line along the "slot". It's defined by an elastic aesthetic between partners and generous space for improvisation. A key feature is the active role of the follower, who can improvise and adapt their musical interpretation to the leader's proposals—either following guidance strictly or suggesting aesthetic variations that the leader then adapts to. West Coast Swing is highly adaptable: you can dance it to soul, R&B, pop, funk, disco, or any music with 4/4 time, and it takes on a different character depending on the music.
West Coast Swing Madrid runs a range of events and classes. These include open initiation classes (free and open to all), paid socials held in private venues, and clandestine events in public spaces (subject to last-minute changes or cancellations). The organisation hosts intensives in variations, dips and tricks, and beginner-level courses. Major annual events include Madrid Westie Fest (October) and BeeMAD, a WSDC Registry international event (April–May), both held at Círculo de Baile.
The community welcomes newcomers. If you've wanted to learn to dance but found it intimidating, beginner intensives run at Círculo de Baile and are designed for those starting from zero. The organisation also curates a calendar of socials, preparation meetups, and workshops led by both local and international instructors.
