About this studio
Young School of Dance teaches ballroom and Latin dancing at St Augustines Hall in Penarth. The school was established in 1984 by Helen E. Young, who is an Associate Member of the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) qualified in both Ballroom and Latin American Dance. Helen's background is competitive — she took up ballroom and Latin dancing at age twelve, entered medallists events, and later competed on the open circuit as an amateur, representing her country abroad. She then moved into teaching and adjudicating, and has held the position of Treasurer to the Welsh Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing since 1984.
Classes are structured by level and style. Tuesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9pm offers Intermediate Latin and Ballroom, where you'll practice routines with expert tuition and learn new sequences regularly. A Beginners Latin and Ballroom class is available (contact to join the waitlist). The school teaches the full range of Latin rhythms—Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive—alongside Ballroom dances including Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quick Step. Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, and Sequence dances are also taught throughout the year; check the classes page for specific dates.
All classes are designed to be fun, friendly, and informal, with individual attention provided to ensure everyone has an enjoyable evening. The school caters for all levels of expertise, from beginners to advanced medallists and competitors. You don't need a partner to attend: everyone is welcome, and the school will try to ensure you have someone to dance with during class, though partners are always welcome.
Private lessons are available year-round by appointment on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evenings (other times available on request). These bespoke sessions are suited to couples who want to consolidate what they've learned in class, improve in a particular area or dance style, or learn basic steps before joining a regular class. Small groups of friends can also book private lessons together. All lessons are taught by a professionally qualified teacher.
