Overview

Non-profit founded in 1986 as the American Tap Dance Orchestra by Brenda Bufalino with Tony Waag and Charles "Honi" Coles, renamed and reorganised in 2002 under Tony Waag. Dedicated to establishing and legitimizing tap as a vital component of American dance through creation, presentation, education and preservation. Produces Tap City, the New York City Tap Festival, maintains the International Tap Dance Hall of Fame and the annual Hoofer and Tap Preservation Awards, runs a Tap Teacher Training Program, and donated its archives to the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library. Closed its American Tap Dance Center in June 2024 but retains non-profit status.
