Overview
Autonomous apex body under India's Ministry of Culture, established by Ministry of Education resolution of 31 May 1952 and inaugurated on 28 January 1953. Its stated mandate is the "preservation and promoting of the vast intangible heritage of India's diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama". It coordinates with state akademis, confers the Akademi Puraskar, and runs national institutions and projects covering Kathak, Manipuri dance, Chhau, Sattriya and Kutiyattam.
