Overview
Founded on 4 May 1738 by Imperial Decree of Empress Anna as the first Russian School of Theatrical Dance, under French ballet master Jean-Baptiste Lande. Renamed in 1957 to honour Agrippina Vaganova, a graduate and teacher who developed the codified and comprehensive syllabus that established a new era in ballet education. The Academy maintains Vaganova's systematic teaching approach as the foundation of its classical ballet training.
