Anastasia Muravyeva

Anastasia Muravyeva is a Russian-born Professional Ballroom dancer who represented the United States throughout her competitive career. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, she began ballroom training at three and entered her first competition at six, developing across International Standard, Latin, and ten-dance styles. Her early training also encompassed ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop, alongside classical piano study, which shaped her later musicality and analytical approach to dance.

At eighteen, Muravyeva moved to Ukraine and entered professional competition, where she became Ukrainian Professional Latin champion before returning to Russia and eventually shifting her focus to Ballroom. She moved to the United States in her early twenties, settling initially in New York with limited English and financial resources. Her first U.S. partnership was with Giampiero Giannico; an archived 2006 Holiday Dance Classic result confirms them as runners-up in Professional International Standard. From 2007 to 2009, Muravyeva danced Professional Standard with Mikhail Avdeev, during which they became frequent U.S. finalists and international semifinalists at major championships including Blackpool and the International.

Muravyeva and Victor Fung began dancing together in November 2009, and their partnership became one of the most enduring and accomplished in American ballroom. Their early years included a sustained sequence of runner-up finishes at the UK Open, British Open, International, and World Professional Open before their breakthrough victories. Between 2012 and 2016, they won four World Cup Professional Standard titles in Shenzhen, four U.S. Open Professional Standard titles, and the 2016 International Open Professional Standard championship in London. On 2 June 2017, Fung and Muravyeva won the British Open Professional Ballroom championship at Blackpool—a victory Muravyeva later described as a lifelong dream. They retained the U.S. National Professional Ballroom title in 2018 and 2019 before retiring from competition in 2021 after twelve years together.

After retirement, Muravyeva expanded into teaching, event organization, business, and philanthropy. The World Dance Council documented her involvement in a 2021 fundraising initiative supporting dancers, while she and Fung founded an enterprise spanning education, events, retail, and charitable work. Her transition illustrates how elite competitive knowledge translates into infrastructure for the broader dance community.
