Sergey Surkov

Sergey Surkov is a Russian Professional Latin dancer and coach who built a sustained career on the international championship circuit and in theatrical show dance. Born in February 1979, Surkov emerged from Moscow's ballroom-dance culture and became known for his partnership with Agnieszka Melnicka, professionally known as Melia. Together they reached the top tier of competitive Latin, appearing as five-time World Professional Latin finalists and competing repeatedly at major championships including Blackpool, the World Championship, the International, and the UK Open.

Surkov and Melia were also prominent invited performers. They appeared at a Kyiv sports-dance event in 2007 and were featured Latin couples at the World Super Stars Dance Festivals in 2012 and surrounding years, where surviving recordings document their work in rumba, samba, cha-cha-cha, paso doble, and jive. Their performances show a partnership that moved fluidly between competitive vocabulary and compact narrative pieces while maintaining recognizable Latin technique.

In 2014, Surkov and Melia won the WDC Open European Professional Latin-American Championship at the Kremlin in Moscow, establishing Surkov as a European Professional Latin champion. The couple's recorded material from championship rounds and invitational stages reveals a distinctive approach: economical movement, strong partnership contrast, and emphasis on timing and dramatic focus over display.

After their competitive peak, Surkov continued to teach and adjudicate internationally. He appeared on the faculty of the Independence Day Ball Dance Camp in 2018 with a substantial competitive record, and the partnership remained active in coaching and mentoring. His ongoing work has extended their influence beyond the results table, with dancers continuing to study their approach to grounded action, body control, masculine and feminine contrast, and performance concentration.
