Yoann Bourgeois

Yoann Bourgeois is a French choreographer, circus artist, and director who has made gravity, suspension, instability, and rebound into a widely recognizable theatrical language spanning circus, dance, installation, and film. Born in France in 1981 and raised in the Jura region, Bourgeois pursued an unusual double curriculum between 2004 and 2006, studying at the Centre national des arts du cirque in Châlons-en-Champagne while training in contemporary dance through the Centre national de danse contemporaine in Angers. This combination brought trampoline, juggling, and trapeze into sustained contact with contemporary-dance composition.

From 2006 to 2010, Bourgeois worked as a permanent performer in Maguy Marin's company, immersing himself in a dance-theatre lineage concerned with group behavior, repetition, social images, and the materiality of bodies onstage. In 2010 he formed his own company and developed *Cavale*, followed by works organized around games, musical structures, and what he calls attempts to approach a "point of suspension." Pieces including *L'Art de la fugue*, *Minuit*, and *Celui qui tombe* established his public vocabulary. In *Celui qui tombe*, six performers negotiate a large moving platform that tilts, rotates, and destabilizes their footing. The apparatus does not merely decorate choreography: it produces conditions to which bodies must respond, shifting continuously between individual survival, collective support, collapse, and dance.

From 2016 to 2022, Bourgeois led Grenoble's Centre chorégraphique national, initially with Rachid Ouramdane and later alone. Presenting organizations identify him as the first circus artist to direct one of France's national choreographic centers. His tenure symbolized circus's growing place inside publicly supported choreographic culture, while his projects expanded into site-specific installations, workshops, and audiovisual collaborations. In 2017 he created *La Mécanique de l'histoire* at the Panthéon in Paris, an in-situ approach to suspension.

His short trampoline-and-stair works became widely circulated online, with the familiar image being a performer repeatedly falling from a staircase, disappearing toward a concealed trampoline, and rebounding into the next step. The loop turns failure into propulsion and edits gravity into a visible score. In 2025 a *Guardian* interview connected that popular image to his broader interest in play, time, mortality, and the present moment.

In 2021, multiple circus artists and collaborators publicly alleged that Bourgeois had reused devices, sequences, or co-created work without adequate credit. Bourgeois rejected suspicions of infringement and argued for artistic lineage and reinterpretation. The matter raises substantive questions about collaboration, power, and attribution within circus practice.
