Dance in Film · 1989

Valmont (1989)

A period adaptation of Les Liaisons dangereuses in which the courtship is carried as much by the dancing as by the dialogue. Ann Jacoby, a founder of the New York Baroque Dance Company, staged historically informed minuets and a bourrée, and each dance marks a turn in the charactersّ relationships.

Valmont is a 1989 dance feature film centred on Historic Baroque Court. For dancers, it's a chance to see the style performed on screen — the phrasing, partnering, and musicality that the same dances carry onto a real floor.

The dance sequences in Valmont

3 sequences — what is danced, by whom, and where to find it.

  1. Evening salon bourrée with Madame de Tourvel

    Bourrée

Danced by Valmont; Madame de Tourvel · Choreography Ann Jacoby

The scholarly source explicitly names this ardent, deliberately slowed couple dance as a Bourrée, providing a first resolvable screen scene for the style.

  2. Evening salon minuets with Madame de Rosemonde and the Marquise de Merteuil

    Minuet

Danced by Valmont; Madame de Rosemonde; Marquise de Merteuil · Choreography Ann Jacoby

The source explicitly says the evening scene repeats the Minuet for Valmont and the two mature female characters, using dance to encode their relationships.

  3. Garden minuet danced by Valmont and Madame de Tourvel

    Minuet

Danced by Valmont; Madame de Tourvel · Choreography Ann Jacoby

The scholarly analysis explicitly identifies the private garden couple dance as a Minuet, adding a first screen scene for this published style.
