About the author

Amiri Baraka (1927–2014), born Everett Leroy Jones, was a poet, playwright, essayist, and cultural critic central to the Black Arts Movement. He worked as a music critic and cultural journalist before publishing Blues People; his writing combined close attention to artistic form with explicit political commitment to Black liberation. His later work grew more explicitly political and Marxist. He was both celebrated and controversial for insisting that cultural criticism was inseparable from social analysis.
