About the author

Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960) was a folklorist, anthropologist, and writer trained at Barnard College under Franz Boas. She conducted fieldwork in the American South, the Caribbean, and Central America, collecting folklore, songs, and oral narratives. Hurston was a major figure of the Harlem Renaissance and is now recognized as a foundational scholar of African American vernacular culture. Her work combined scientific anthropology with literary narrative, a hybrid approach that was innovative for its time.
