About this studio

Absolute Ballroom teaches ballroom and Latin dance to everyone from complete beginners to competitive dancers. You'll work with Lizza Jackson, the owner, who holds a BFA in Theatre & Dance and has performed in Dublin, Ireland and in theatrical productions. She teaches American Rhythm and American Smooth, combining technique with a relaxed approach designed to build your confidence as you improve.

All lessons are private and last 45 minutes. You schedule them by appointment at your convenience—no fixed class times, no contracts, no memberships. The first lesson is a consultation at $25; your instructor can then offer discounts if you book a block of five or more lessons to work toward a specific goal. You don't need a partner—your instructor dances with you while you learn.

The studio runs social dance parties where you practise new patterns in a low-light, music-filled setting with soft drinks and light appetizers. These are open to the public and all ages and levels. Before each party there's usually a group class to review old patterns or teach new ones. The dances include Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Argentine Tango, Swing Dance and International Styles, with music ranging from oldies to current hits. Instructors circulate to help you remember patterns or work out which dance fits each song.

Most students develop enough skill for social dancing within a few private lessons. The studio estimates that a typical student takes one to three years to complete a Bronze program, after which you'll feel confident with patterns, styling, and the ability to lead or follow almost any partner. The studio recommends dancing at least once a week to retain what you've learned. Lessons are offered afternoons and evenings, Tuesday to Saturday by appointment.

What to expect

Your first visit

Your first lesson is a 45-minute consultation where you'll be introduced to two or three popular social dances and your instructor will help you design a custom programme around your schedule, budget and goals. You're under no obligation to book more lessons. Wear whatever comfortable clothes you have—jeans are fine—and soft-soled shoes or trainers for your first few sessions.
