About this studio

Argentine Tango Lab opened in 2011 with a vision to create a dance laboratorio for those wanting to learn Argentine Tango the way it is taught in Buenos Aires. The studio is run by Gabriel and Maria, who offer group classes, technique classes, private lessons, and host regular milongas.

Gabriel has been teaching, choreographing and performing Argentine Tango for more than 20 years, with over 30 years of professional dance experience that began with the renowned dance ensemble Doina. He has competed in three World Tango Dance Tournaments (Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango) in Buenos Aires and has performed across the US, Eastern Europe and South America. His teaching draws on influences from Osvaldo Zotto and other respected teachers including Carlitos and Rosa Perez, Lorena Ermocida, Guillermina Quiroga, Vanesa Villalba, Facundo Pinero, Alejandra Gutty and Daniel Juarez.

Classes are structured by level. Group classes run on weekends: Beginners on Sunday 6:00–7:00pm, Improvers on Saturday 6:30–7:30pm, and Intermediate/Advanced on Sunday 7:00–8:00pm, all at Holy Trinity Cathedral. These eight-week series cost $190. Followers Technique classes run every Saturday 7:30–8:30pm ($25 drop-in or $100 for 5 classes). Gabriel emphasises correct fundamentals, connection, musicality and improvisation, tailoring his methodical approach to each student's individual needs. Classes focus on quality of movement and body awareness rather than memorised sequences.

Private lessons are available for those seeking faster progress, preparing for performances or planning a first dance at a wedding. Options include a 90-minute tryout ($150), 5-hour package ($550), 10-hour package ($1,000), or semi-private classes for 2–3 couples ($200 per lesson). Two instructors are available at an additional 20% cost.

The studio runs Practica Sonrisas, a weekly guided practice session on Sunday, open to all levels. Milonga de Abrazos social dances take place on the third Thursday of each month (note: the directory lists the fourth Thursday, but the website states third Thursday) from 8:00 to 11:30pm at 154 E 10th Ave, Vancouver. The milonga offers a relaxed atmosphere with a large hall and quality sound system.
