About this studio
Argentine Tango Lab opened in 2011 with a mission to become a dance laboratorio for tango lovers wanting to learn what the founders call the Dance of Embraces the way it is taught in Buenos Aires. The studio has since participated in festivals, shows and events across Vancouver, the US, Europe and Buenos Aires.
Gabriel has been teaching, choreographing and performing Argentine Tango for more than 20 years, and started dancing professionally more than 30 years ago with the renowned dance ensemble Doina. He has competed in three World Tango Dance Tournaments (Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango) in Buenos Aires, performed across the US, Eastern Europe and Buenos Aires, and been a judge at tango competitions in the US. His teaching influences include Osvaldo Zotto, Carlitos and Rosa Perez, Lorena Ermocida, Guillermina Quiroga, Vanesa Villalba, Facundo Pinero, Alejandra Gutty and Daniel Juarez.
Classes are tailored to each person's individual needs, starting with correct and strong fundamentals to build confidence and elegance on the dance floor. Gabriel's methodical approach combines dance drills and exercises that develop technique and make dancing easy and elegant, the way it is danced in milongas in Buenos Aires. Group classes run at different levels—Beginners, Improvers, and Intermediate/Advanced—with a dedicated Followers Technique class on Saturdays. Technique classes focus on leg projection, weight transfer, stability, pivoting, embellishments and expression. Classes also cover musicality and improvisation.
Classes are held at Holy Trinity Cathedral. Private lessons are available for individuals seeking faster learning, preparing for a wedding first dance, or working toward higher goals in dance. Semi-private classes work well for couples or small groups. Gabriel and Maria also run Practica Sonrisas, a guided practica every Sunday where students work on improving their dancing. The Milonga de Abrazos, held every third Thursday of the month from 8:00 to 11:30 pm at the studio address (154 E 10th Ave), offers a relaxed and happy atmosphere with a big hall, great sound and quality DJs.
