About this studio
Arthur Murray Dance Studios at Crows Nest has been teaching ballroom and Latin dancing on Sydney's Lower North Shore since 1968. This is one of Arthur Murray's founding studios in Australia, originally opened by Nicholas Romano, the Australasian Area Chairman. The studio operates Monday to Friday 2pm–10pm and Saturday 10am–2pm.
Chris Michaels and Joanne Middonte took over the studio in 1995 and have built it into a thriving community hub. Chris was ranked as the Top Advanced Instructor world-wide within his first year and became Australia's Top Choreographer and Dance Director, winning multiple awards. Joanne was awarded Top Specialist Instructor world-wide in her first year and has won numerous national and international awards. Both continue to teach actively and are passionate about staff training and student development.
The studio teaches all popular ballroom and Latin styles: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Bolero, Samba, Mambo, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Swing, West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Hustle, and Lindy Hop. Classes are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels for singles, couples, and wedding dancers. Group lessons and private lessons both run in the studio.
The building has been refurbished since opening and retains one of the last standing sprung wooden dance floors, which absorbs impact to protect students' bodies. The studio is partitioned into several generous areas, allowing private lessons to run independently of group classes. There is plenty of street parking available, and the studio is easily accessible via bus or train.
Beyond lessons, the studio hosts regular social dancing nights, competitions (locally and internationally), showcases, and parties. In 2017 and 2018, Arthur Murray Crows Nest was the major dance studio sponsor for the NSW Cancer Council 'Stars of the North' charity function, raising £138,000 and £148,000 respectively. The Crows Nest studio opened in 1968 as one of Arthur Murray's founding Australian studios. Chris Michaels joined in the late 1980s as a trainee and within five years, along with his wife Joanne Middonte, took over operations in 1995. The studio has been teaching the lower and upper North Shore of Sydney for over 50 years.
