About this studio

Construct is a street styles dance studio born out of the breaking scene in north Nashville. The space operates on a community-based model where instructors and artists manage their own curricula, promotion, and payment in exchange for low space rental rates. Beyond breakdance, Construct hosts house dance classes, capoeira instruction, karate, and regularly welcomes visual artists, flow performers, and other performance arts to teach and showcase work.

The studio offers classes for all ages. Baby Breakers runs Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4–6 year-olds (4:30–5:00 pm). Youth Breaking I (7–15 years) meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00–6:00 pm, with Youth Breaking II on Fridays 5:30–6:30 pm. Power Moves class is Fridays 6:30–7:30 pm. For adults, an Adult Breakdance Class runs Wednesdays 7:00–8:00 pm (currently paused). Open practice sessions are free and run Mondays and Wednesdays 8:00–10:00 pm and Fridays 7:30–9:30 pm.

House Dance classes restarted in September 2024: Adult House Dance Class is Sundays 7:00–8:00 pm ($10 drop-in), with an Open Session following at 8:00 pm (age 15+, no cover). A separate House dance drop-in class runs Tuesdays 6:15–7:15 pm (age 15+). House instruction covers foundational steps, connections, improvisation, and partner routine skills for club dancing. Capoeira Angola Palmares is taught by Marc Peek (Zulu). The studio also hosts World Oyama Karate Saturdays 1:00–2:00 pm (age 5+) and Heels classes—check the Google calendar for Heels schedule.

The facility spans 2,000 sq ft with 1,100 sq ft of traditional sprung maple wood floor, 27 feet of wall mirrors, and 17 ft ceilings. Sound includes QSC K2 12" mains, a 15" Alto subwoofer, monitors, and mics. Lighting covers stage and club options. Equipment includes tumbling mats, balance boards, Olympic rings, and other movement tools. Construct rents space to dance classes and other activities at $25–$40/hour and hosts events from $50/hour. The studio offers breakdance performances for special events, birthday parties and workshops for kids and adults, and has an in-house sound technician.

Studio history

Construct was born out of the street styles dance scene with a heavy foundation in breaking. Miriam Kraatz developed the vision for a venue bringing many forms of art together after moving to Nashville in 2003 and attending breakdance practice at Rocketown in 2006. The studio operates on a slow, community-based building process, supporting often young people starting their journey as teachers and community leaders.
