Double Time Dance Studio

Double Time Dance Studio opened in Taos, New Mexico in 1998 and relocated to Albuquerque in 2006. The studio was founded by John Henry Moore, who has been teaching partner dancing for over 30 years. John is a veteran choreographer who has created dance sequences for films and was recognised with a first place award in the salsa dance competition at the Salsa Mambo Festival, one of the largest salsa festivals in the United States, in 2009. He has also taught at that festival. Beyond competition and choreography, John kept the studio operating through the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating a commitment to the Albuquerque dance community.

The studio specialises in all genres of partner dancing, with particular focus on what they call "club style"—the current style danced in social settings in clubs and venues. Classes run throughout the week: Monday offers beginner and advanced salsa; Wednesday features tango and practice sessions; Thursday covers country swing and advanced swing; Saturday includes intermediate salsa technique, swing, and beginner tango; and Sunday teaches a mixed class in Latin, ballroom, and blues. All group classes operate on a drop-in basis and are open to beginners with no prior experience.

In addition to weekly classes, Double Time partners with UNM Continuing Education to offer six-week foundational courses in West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Latin Ballroom & Blues, L.A. Style Salsa, and Country Two-Step. These courses build core dancing skills and can be booked through UNM's website or directly through the studio.

The studio's physical space is a 1200 square foot dance floor housed in a stylishly decorated venue embellished with items from the owner's travels and memorabilia from his dance career. The space includes a bar, restroom, and a newly updated sound system. Beyond classes, Double Time offers private lessons for correct form and styling, wedding choreography and wedding dance lessons, and event space rental for special occasions or dance-related events.

Group lessons welcome both singles and couples, with partners changing frequently during class so no partner is required to attend. The studio's stated philosophy is to get students on the dance floor quickly while building strong dance habits and technique.

Drop in to any weekly class and you'll find a partner-focused lesson with beginner and advanced options throughout the week. Classes are informal and welcoming—the studio explicitly states "WE LOVE BEGINNERS"—and you'll change partners frequently during group sessions, so you don't need to bring one.

John Henry Moore is the owner and lead instructor. He has over 30 years of experience teaching partner dancing, began his dance career at age 15, and was a first-place winner in salsa at the Salsa Mambo Festival in 2009.

Beginners are explicitly welcome and encouraged to drop into any beginner-level class; no prior experience is necessary.
