About this studio
El Duende is a dedicated tango studio in Munich run by Christian and Helga, who teach and dance close-embrace tango de salón in the style of Buenos Aires's golden era. Their philosophy centres on harmony between partners, elegant walking, good embrace, and musicality over spectacle. Each dance is improvised, never choreographed, making every moment unique.
Christian and Helga trained directly in Buenos Aires with Mario Bournissen and Eugenia Martínez, two leading Argentine tango dancers. They have spent years in Buenos Aires studying other teachers' methods and dancing nightly in crowded milongas, yet prioritise developing their own distinct style. They teach in German, English and Spanish.
Their method does not ask you to memorise rigid figures. Instead, they teach vocabulary and grammar — the basics and structure of tango — and use intensive bodywork and communication exercises to help students improvise from the start. This approach suits beginners and advanced dancers alike. The studio offers regular group classes, private lessons by appointment, and online technique sessions on Sunday evenings (18:30–19:30), streamed live from the studio so you can join from home.
El Duende hosts a regular milonga (social dance event) where classical tangos are played in tandas with cortinas. Before each milonga, a multilevel class runs from 18:30 to 19:50, with individual instruction tailored to each couple's level — from complete beginners to advanced dancers. The studio also rents space hourly at low cost to dancers who wish to practise alone or in small groups.
The studio occupies a basement room (Souterrain) in the rear courtyard (Rückgebäude) of Amalienstraße 45, easily reached by public transport: U3/U6 to Universität, Tram 27 to Schellingstraße, or Bus 154 to Türkenstraße/Universität.
