About this studio
Excel Dance operates two locations in Sheffield: Longacre Way in Halfway and Courtside at Hillsborough on Penistone Road. The studio was founded in 2008 by Sharnie Richards, who had trained and competed in dance competitions across the UK for over 28 years. What began as a single street dance class on a Saturday morning in Beighton has grown to teach over 350 students across a full-time academy open 6 days a week.
The three main styles taught are street dance, contemporary, and commercial dance. Classes span all ages: Dance Tots for 18 months to 3 years, Mini Movers for 3–5 years, Excel Juniors for 6+, and dedicated Teen & Adult classes. Street dance is described as fun and fast-paced, with upper Tinies classes offered for competitions and performances. Contemporary offers a slower-paced style for emotional expression through movement. Commercial dance teaches the polished, energetic style seen in concerts, live shows, music videos and movies. Musical Theatre classes are available for two age groups: 5–9 years and 10–13 years. Adult Street Dance is bookable in 8-week blocks, with the first class complimentary and no obligation.
Life skill education is built into all classes, with team talks at the end of each session focusing on focus, discipline, teamwork, confidence and respect. The studio offers opportunities for competitions, performances and yearly shows designed to build student confidence. Beyond classes, Excel Dance organises extra family events such as bowling and rollerblasing, and runs free Excel Discos for members.
Dance birthday parties are a key offering: 90-minute packages include exclusive facility hire, a dedicated party host and assistants, dance-themed games, food and drinks, table setup, unlimited juice and water, and complimentary week-long class passes for the birthday child and all guests. The birthday child's place is free, and parties can be themed with fancy dress and tailored to the child's preferences—street dance, cheer dance, or custom combinations.
The coaching team includes Sharnie Richards (founder, trained for over 22 years in ballet, tap, modern, jazz, disco, contemporary, commercial and street dance), Danica Broughton (dancing at Excel for 8 years since age 9), Abi Turner (professional commercial dance coach), Sydney Martin (assistant coach, 7 years street dance experience), and Abby Tucker (assistant coach, 7 years experience in multiple styles). Rachel Martin heads front of house.
