About this studio
Fred Astaire Dance Studios Alhambra teaches ballroom, Latin, smooth, rhythm and swing dances at 2121 Orange Street, Unit C. The studio is independently owned and operated by Jonathan Roberts, a former World Champion Ballroom Dancer, and Leonid Burlo, a FAWC American smooth champion and two-time World and US National finalist. The team also includes instructor Ailsa Sandy, who has competed in international salsa championships.
The studio offers private lessons, group classes and practice sessions. Private lessons pair you with a certified dance instructor; group classes cover a range of dances and techniques; practice sessions recreate a social dance atmosphere with dimmed lights and music so you can apply what you've learned. The curriculum covers American, Latin, International Style and Ballroom Style dances, plus exhibition and theatre arts dances for both social and competitive dancers. You'll be on your way to confident dancing by the end of your first lesson.
Wedding dance instruction is a core offering. The studio customises choreography for first dances, father-daughter and mother-son dances, and full wedding party routines. Lessons can range from a few simple steps to a fully choreographed routine set to your song. The team recommends starting at least five to six months before your wedding, though shorter timelines can be accommodated. You can bring your favourite song, venue pictures and wedding attire to your free consultation.
Competitive dancers can pursue Pro-Am and Professional competitions at regional, inter-regional, national and international levels. The studio also runs guest parties, showcases, spotlights and coaching sessions. New students take advantage of an introductory offer: one private lesson for $69. Available lesson times are 11:00 AM to 8:45 PM Monday to Friday; all appointments need 24-hour advance confirmation and a minimum of 24 hours' notice for cancellation or rescheduling.
The studio emphasises a warm, non-judgmental, joyful community atmosphere. Single adults and couples are equally welcome; if you're solo, your instructor becomes your partner for private lessons, and group classes and practice sessions offer chances to meet and dance with other students. All dance instructors are certified in the Fred Astaire Curriculum, which was developed by Fred Astaire himself. Many instructors have fine arts degrees and are actively competing, award-winning professional dancers.

What to bring
Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Leather-sole shoes for men; for women, a shoe with a back (similar to going-out dancing shoes). Athletic shoes do not work on the ballroom floor because they stick. If you've already bought wedding shoes, bring them to your first lesson to check if they'll work.
