Mälarsalen is Stockholm's largest and leading dance venue, with a dance floor that has been worn smooth since 1972. The studio runs regular Sunday evening classes and weekend intensive courses for dancers of all levels — beginners and experienced dancers alike.
You can learn bugg, dubbelbugg, foxtrot, lindy hop, swing, salsa, vals, tango, and chacha/rumba. Bugg is recommended as a perfect starting point if you have no dance experience; it's a fast-paced social dance with a simpler structure than its jitterbug origins, designed so you can dance it with anyone else who has learned the basics. Foxtrot, Sweden's most common social dance, is taught here with modern technique and emphasis on feeling and musicality — the studio does not teach the "gnuss" style variant. The other styles each have their own character and the studio encourages dancers to try several to become more complete.
Classes run during term time, with summer break from late June to mid-August. A free try-on session is held in August, and autumn term classes run from late August to mid-December. The studio offers private lessons (Privatlektioner), intensive courses (Intensivkurser), and social dancing (Socialdans) events.
Beyond classes, Mälarsalen hosts Sweden's leading dance bands and is a social dancing venue.
