About this studio
Mambo Productions has been Calgary's home for Afro-Latin dance since 2003. Under the direction of David, an original faculty member who took over in 2012, the school specializes in Salsa, Mambo, Bachata, Cha Cha Cha, Pachanga, and Merengue. Classes run at beginner through advanced levels, and the studio's stated goal is to grow and elevate Calgary's Latin social dance scene.
Group classes are offered for ages 16 and up, with multiple sessions each week. The July series features Salsa Level 1 (Mondays 8:15–9:15pm), Salsa Level 1.5 (Tuesdays 7:00–8:00pm), and Salsa Level 2 (Tuesdays 8:15–9:15pm), each running four weeks. Bachata Sensual Style classes run Mondays and Thursdays at three levels. The Mambo Technique Lab, a 90-minute weekly session on Wednesdays (7:00–8:30pm), is a structured 16-week program focused on technique, musicality, body movement, and Afro-Caribbean foundations, with limited spots to maintain training quality. No partner is required for any group class.
The school employs eight named instructors, each with distinct backgrounds. David has competed internationally, including at the World Salsa Championships, and trained with Eddie Torres, Adolfo Indacochea, Juan Matos, Frankie Martinez, and Jason Molina. Lucy joined the Advanced Performance Team and co-directs the Tumbao team. Elena developed the Bachata Sensual curriculum and has performed on the Calgary Salsa Congress stage since 2015. Karina, Melvin, Youssef, Shirley, Athina, and Denys round out the faculty. Private lessons are available in all styles and levels; couples can share a lesson at no additional fee.
Performance opportunities include the school's student performance teams, ranging from beginner to advanced, with dancers eligible to join based on interest and level. Workshops and special events complement the regular class schedule. The school organizes student parties and keeps students updated on Calgary's wider dance social scene. Corporate and private event packages include choreographed performances and workshops for groups of up to 16 people.
