About this studio
The Montreal Salsa Convention is a five-day dance festival held annually at the DoubleTree by Hilton Montreal. Now in its 21st year, it draws competitors and dancers from across Canada and internationally for a programme that combines live competition, nightly dance shows, weekend workshops led by international and national artists, and continuous social dancing in salsa and bachata.
The event runs Thursday to Sunday (May 14–17, 2026) with doors opening Thursday morning for competitor check-in. Competition categories include Heats, Showcase, Professional, Amateur, Team, Pro-Am, and a 17 & Under division. The PHOENIX Rising Dance Championships is the convention's premier international competition platform, offering over $10,000 in total prizes and serving as an official qualifier for the Summit Championship. Pro Couple winners receive $1,000 cash, a championship trophy, qualification to the Summit, a professional highlight reel, and automatic invitation to future PHOENIX Rising events; Pro Solo winners receive $500 cash and equivalent benefits. The Newcomer Division welcomes first-time competitors, restricting entrants to basic and fundamental techniques as defined in the official Canadian Salsa Dance Corporation curriculum.
Workshops run Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM across two rooms (Grand Salon and Soprano), catering to various skill levels. No partner is required; participants rotate partners to encourage learning and connection. Evening performances typically begin at 8:00 PM, with a Gala Night featuring the Son Candela Latin Band. Social dancing runs late into the night on all event nights: Thursday until 2:00 AM, Friday until 3:00 AM, Saturday until 4:00 AM (with Bachata and Hustle in Soprano, Salsa in Grand Salon), and Sunday until 4:00 AM in Salsa and Bachata.
The convention is produced by the Canadian Salsa Dance Corporation (CSDC), a non-profit organisation that promotes Latin dance, music and culture. Its mission is to build public appreciation for Latin dance styles and create opportunities for dancers of all ages and levels to network, gain exposure and contribute to the growth of the community. All competition participants are featured on the PHOENIX Rising Legacy Wall, a permanent digital archive on the Montreal Salsa Convention website, preserving each dancer's moment on stage as part of the event's history.
The venue is the DoubleTree by Hilton Montreal at 1255 Rue Jeanne-Mance, conveniently located across from Metro Place des Arts. On-site hotel accommodation is available, and the organisers recommend staying at the hotel to avoid commute times and remain close to all events throughout the weekend.
