PJ Turner Dance teaches country and swing dancing in Knoxville, Tennessee, led by PJ Turner, a NASDE tour champion and recognised competitor on both the swing and country dance circuits. PJ began dancing at age 10 with clogging, inspired by his brother's line dancing stories. By 12, he was line dancing, and at 14, he started partner dancing, learning East Coast Swing and other dances from his future wife, Lisa, whom he met in high school. His competitive career took off with his first event at Peach State in Atlanta, then he joined Team Joe, traveling across the Southeast U.S. teaching and competing. He was crowned NASDE tour Champion in 2012 and received several social dance awards. A key moment came when he appeared on the national TV show "Club Dance," which aired for three years. His partnership with Tashina Beckmann King led to multiple US Open finals and performances in the Off-Broadway show "Swango." In 2015, PJ transitioned to dancing full-time.
The studio offers group classes, private 1-on-1 instruction, and instructional dance videos. Class offerings include country dance styles (2-step, cha-cha, waltz and other country-style dances), swing dancing, and line and social dancing. The studio also runs a competitive programme for those wanting to experience competing on the swing and country circuit. All sessions are appointment-only or group lessons, and you can book through their online system.
PJ is described as approachable and down-to-earth in the dance community. He lives in Knoxville with his wife Lisa and two daughters, Alyssa and Brianne. His dance journey has been unconventional — before transitioning to dance full-time in 2015, he worked in carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and appliance repair, at one point juggling three jobs to support his dance ambitions. Today, he travels globally teaching, judging, and performing.
