Monday Practica takes place at 927 Granville and runs from 7:20pm to 9:30pm. It combines salsa lessons with salsa practice, followed by a free salsa bachata social for enrolled students. The environment is alcohol-free, all-ages, with hardwood flooring in a studio setting, and casual dress is appropriate.
Thursday Bachata ME is held at 927 Granville from 7:30pm to 9:30pm for lessons, with a party continuing at Union Latino (1149 Granville) from 9:30pm to midnight. The party plays 90% modern bachata with a splash of romantic salsa. Drop-in party entry is $10, though the party is free for students enrolled in Bachata lessons. This is also alcohol-free, all-ages, with hardwood flooring and casual dress.
Group lessons follow a 6-week progressive structure. Salsa 1 Fundamental covers basics, cumbia, side basic, new yorker and cross body patterns. Bachata 1 Fundamental teaches side basics, front and back basics, half steps, turn patterns, cuddle steps, box steps, swivel and body and head rolls. Intermediate and advanced levels build on these foundations with more complex techniques and combinations. No partner is required to enrol.
Roger's teaching style incorporates humour and breaks down patterns to suit dancers of all levels. He offers private lessons Monday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, for one-on-one instruction and wedding choreography. Co-instructor Elina has been an active member of the Vancouver Latin dance community since 2004, learning modern dance, hip hop, ballet, street jazz, west coast swing and Argentine tango before specializing in salsa, bachata, mambo and cha cha. She has performed on multiple stages, organized dance events and assisted international artists during workshops. She has been teaching salsa with Roger since 2012 and is a member of his Mambo performance team.
The Saturday Salsa Bachata Vancouver party is held at Granville Island Picnic Pavilion from 6:30pm to 10:00pm, with paid lessons at 6:30pm and social dancing from 7:30pm. The social costs $5 donation, and is free for current Salsa Studio students. Contact the WhatsApp group for current information.
