Shall We Swing

Shall We Swing teaches swing dance and yoga in Lyon and Villeurbanne, with a community of over 1,000 dancers and yogis. The studio has operated since 2017 and offers weekly classes, workshops, stages, and regular social events.

Weekly classes cover Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston solo (solo jazz), Solo Blues, and Acro-Yoga. Classes are structured with warmup, focused exercises, and free-dance practice in music. Beginners learn the foundations—8-tempo, 6-tempo, and charleston—and progress quickly to social dancing. Intermediate and advanced students consolidate skills, learn new movements and variations, and explore thematic courses in musicality, dips & tricks, and fast lindy hop. A typical season runs 32 weeks from September to June. All classes are taught in French unless otherwise noted; all instructors speak French and English, and some also speak Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese.

The Shall We Team comprises passionate swing enthusiasts invested in the Lyon and European swing scene. They train regularly in stages to stay current. Pair-dance classes are typically taught by two team members; solo jazz has one dedicated instructor. You can attend as a single student without a partner, though pair-dance students can register with a partner from the opposite role if desired. The same instructors teach each class throughout the year unless otherwise announced.

Social events include regular initiations and dances (bals) for meeting other dancers. Upcoming socials include Shall We Swing l'été (summer events from 3 July), Heat initiations and dances (22 July and 26 August 2026), and La Plagne Swing workshop-retreat (16–23 August 2026). The studio also organises workshops and stages ranging from beginner to advanced levels, and runs custom events for groups: EVJF (hen parties), EVG (stag parties), weddings, and bespoke corporate events.

First-time visitors can take a free trial class (cours d'essai) during the season opening through 31 October, or at social events; from 1 November, trial classes cost €10. Registration is managed through a student portal (Espace Élèves), where students access the class calendar, video recaps, and manage bookings. The FAQ addresses most queries about attendance, levels, solo participation, payments, and safeguarding.

A typical class begins with warmup (for example, from charleston solo movements or a game), moves into exercises around a specific step or theme, then includes free-dance practice to music. You'll need clean, flat, smooth shoes to protect the dance floor, comfortable clothing, and (for yoga) your own mat.

The Shall We Team consists of experienced swing enthusiasts committed to the Lyon and European swing scene. They train regularly to stay current. Pair-dance classes are taught by two team members (with exceptions); solo jazz is taught by one dedicated instructor. You will have the same instructors throughout the year unless a team member is replaced.

Yes; beginners learn the bases (8-tempo, 6-tempo, charleston) and progress quickly to social dancing. You can attend without a partner, and trial classes are free during the opening season period through 31 October.
