About this studio
Swing in Utrecht is a volunteer-run foundation teaching swing dancing to all levels. Founded in 2005 by Jojanneke, Anette and Arjan, the organisation has grown from a handful of students to a thriving community across multiple venues in the city. The studio teaches Lindy Hop as its main style, alongside Blues, Collegiate Shag, Solo Jazz, Charleston and Balboa — all rooted in African-American dance traditions from the 1920s to 1950s.
Classes run in three blocks per year (January–March, April–June, September–December), usually with 10–12 lessons per block. Beginners start with Lindy 1A and progress through numbered levels; every Wednesday there is a free drop-in beginner class from 19:30 to 20:15. Partner rotation is standard in all partner dances, and the studio encourages dancers to learn both lead and follow roles. A full block costs €149 per course; students and low-income dancers receive a €25 discount.
The teaching team is large and mixed, with both local instructors and visiting international guest teachers. Stella has choreographed wedding dances and the "SiU routine". Jojanneke, one of the three founders, has been teaching and organising since 2005 and played a major role in establishing the Utrecht scene. Frank was the first Blues teacher in the Netherlands, starting around 2006. The studio hosts classes across six locations: Podium Oost, Gym van Imhoffstraat, Gym Amsterdamsestraatweg, Gym Schoolplein, Theaterhuis Berenkuil and Gym Pieterskerkhof.
Beyond classes, Swing in Utrecht runs regular social dances called HopSpots (weekly), HopSpot Live events, Blues Nights, and the SwingDom festival — a yearly workshop featuring international teachers and live bands including Gordon Webster and his All Star Band. The Fast Feet Social, Dom City Stomp, SiU Special and The SwingLab Series are other regular events. Summer Workshops (July–August) offer 23 workshops across 6 dance styles at beginner to advanced levels. Private lessons are available by request.

Studio history
Swing in Utrecht began in 2005 when three Utrechters — Jojanneke, Anette and Arjan — started the first Lindy Hop classes in the city. The first block in March 2005 had only a few students, but a performance at UitMarkt in August that year brought the next block to about 45 students. The foundation was registered in 2007. In 2011, regular social dancing (HopSpots) began in a small attic venue; this moved to Winkel van Sinkel in 2012 and stayed there for almost 10 years. SwingDom, the yearly international workshop, began in 2012 with Gordon Webster and his All Star Band, who became an almost yearly visitor. The COVID-19 pandemic closed lessons, festivals and socials temporarily; they have since returned to near pre-COVID strength.
