About this studio
Strictly Tango is a small, intimate studio dedicated to Argentine tango in East Vancouver. Studio owner and instructor Nadia Tavakoli teaches all classes herself, bringing a lifetime of dance experience to every session. She is known for her warmth, passion, and ability to ground dancers in tango's core principles.
Nadia organises classes at three levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Weeknight classes run for 1.5 hours and are crafted to meet the needs of dancers at various levels. Weekend workshops are organised around themes and designed for all levels. The studio also offers private sessions for students at every level. Class sizes are deliberately kept small to ensure that all participants benefit from Nadia's attention to detail in every session.
Each class is followed by fifteen to twenty minutes of open practice where you can consolidate what you've just learned. Nadia is committed to ensuring that every student is enrolled at the most suitable level—movement between levels can take time and is not always one-way. An advanced dancer may choose to explore dancing the opposite role and start at Level 1 again; an experienced dancer returning after a break may find Level 2 a better fit; a novice dancer taking private sessions and attending weekly milongas and practicas frequently may advance quickly.
The studio is located in a ground floor suite at 350 East 2nd Avenue, Vancouver. Classes take place in Nadia's live/work studio space. Beyond weekly classes, Strictly Tango organises monthly Charity Practicas, where 100% of revenue less the rental fee is donated to a chosen charity, with full disclosure of amounts and recipients shared via Facebook or email.
Nadia especially encourages women to learn the lead role, citing benefits that include deeper musical understanding, increased confidence, and the chance to dance more freely at milongas without waiting to be asked. You are encouraged to attend local practicas and milongas to put what you've learned into action on the dance floor—there is no substitute for practice.
