About this studio

Studio Dansu is a 6,000+ square foot creative and performing arts education centre located on the South Side of Madison, near Fitchburg and Oregon. The facility houses multiple spacious dance studios, music and acting rooms, and a comfortable lobby with live-feed TV screens so parents can watch their children's progress without traditional viewing windows.

The dance programme develops knowledge of dance styles and builds upon foundational movements with the integration of advanced steps and combinations. Students develop their strength, flexibility, and coordination while exploring their artistry. The studio's spacious dance studios feature full-length mirrors for body alignment and group unison practice, and a floating subfloor that protects dancers of all ages from stress and injury.

Beyond dance, Studio Dansu offers music instruction through private lessons, studio lessons, and specialised workshops, with personal attention in one-on-one lessons, group classes in various instruments, and general music theory. The theatre programme allows students to freely express themselves through improvisation and games, while also building technique through monologues and scene work. An art programme provides a creative setting to strengthen technical skills and develop artistic abilities.

The teaching faculty are professional artists holding degrees or certifications in their fields, encouraged to pursue ongoing education. Jayme Shimooka serves as Owner and Artistic Director. The studio's philosophy centres on nurturing passionate and thoughtful artists, teaching the foundations of the creative and performing arts rather than competition, and integrating the history of each discipline to enrich students' education. The goal is to prepare students for local performances, college arts programmes, and professional careers in the performing arts, whether they are aspiring professionals or hobbyists.

The studio provides free WiFi and complimentary coffee and tea for families. Studio Dansu acknowledges that the facility occupies ancestral Ho-Chunk land and affirms its commitment to the transformative power of the arts and celebrating shared human experience.
