About this studio
Swingout OKC is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to vintage swing dances including Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, and Balboa. The organisation began in 2016 when a handful of dancers found each other at a public city dance event and decided to build a swing dance scene in Oklahoma City. What started as the "Oklahoma City Swing Dance Collective" became officially Swingout OKC in 2019, when they launched their first Lindy Workshop and began operations as a nonprofit.
Every Monday night, Swingout OKC hosts lessons and social dances at Perets Dessert & Coffee Bar. The weekly structure is straightforward: a beginner lesson runs from 7:00pm to 8:00pm (you'll learn a basic 6-count or 8-count swing step, 2–3 fancy moves usually including a turn, and some swing history), followed by a social dance from 8:00pm to 10:00pm with a DJ. An intermediate lesson takes place on the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:15pm and can include line dances and intermediate content. The group also hosts occasional events at Sailor and the Dock.
No partner is required. During lessons, you rotate partners so everyone dances with multiple people; during socials, dancers ask many partners throughout the evening. Children are welcome, though parents are responsible for their own supervision. The organisation is entirely volunteer-run and maintains a safe space policy.
Swingout OKC has grown beyond weekly lessons to host larger events. In 2019, they threw their first interstate Scissortail Swing dance event, which drew over 200 dancers from around the USA to learn from professional dancers from Texas and Washington. They've also taught classic Lindy Hop routines at the Will Rogers Theatre on New Year's Eve and partnered with Oklahoma City Parks & Rec Department to host a beginner lesson and dance with live music from the Savoy Trio.
What to expect
Your first visit
Arrive at 7pm for a beginner-friendly lesson where you'll learn fundamental swing steps and moves with rotating partners. After the 8pm social dance begins, you can ask people to dance throughout the evening while a DJ provides music. No experience or partner needed.

In 2019, the group officially began operations as a nonprofit and hosted their first Lindy Workshop in April. In 2023, they moved to Perets Dessert & Coffee Bar.
