About this studio

Tango by the River opened on April 7, 2000, at 128 J Street in Old Sacramento. Founded on the belief that dance has the power to transform lives, the studio has spent over two decades welcoming dancers of all ages and experience levels. Argentine tango, as they describe it, is a beautiful conversation without words—a dance built on connection, trust, creativity, and presence.

The studio teaches close embrace tango across three levels. Beginning Tango classes run Mondays from 6:30–7:30 pm and cover the fundamentals: the tango embrace and posture, simple steps with a partner, musicality and connection. Intermediate Tango meets Mondays from 7:30–8:30 pm and introduces giros (turns) and more sophisticated concepts; students who have completed the Beginning program can retake those classes free while paying for Intermediate. Advanced/Intermediate classes run Thursdays from 6:30–7:30 pm, followed by a half-hour practica.

The studio regularly hosts guest teachers. Eduardo Saucedo taught special Thursday Advanced workshops in September and October 2026. Beyond regular classes, Tango by the River offers private lessons, dances, and event rentals at their Old Sacramento location. They also run the Lake Tahoe Tango Festival and organise tango trips to Cancun.

Pricing is straightforward: $50 per person for the month (or $90 per couple) for any level, with $15 drop-in rates. A $5 introductory tango class is available for those trying tango for the first time. The studio emphasizes that tango is far more than steps—it's connection with your partner, the music, the floor, and other dancers.
