About this studio
SwingInUtah has been teaching swing dance in Salt Lake City since 2008, operating from DF Dance Studio at 2978 S State St in South Salt Lake. The studio is led by Maria Ivanova, a national-level West Coast Swing All-Star competitor whose experience in both teaching and competing shapes the structure and quality of every class.
You can learn West Coast Swing — a smooth, slotted partner dance with roots in swing dancing, known for connection, improvisation, and musicality — or Country Swing, a high-energy partner dance that blends country styling, spins, and fun musicality. West Coast Swing works with pop, R&B, blues, country, and contemporary music. Country Swing is one of Utah's most popular partner dances, perfect for social dancing and date nights. The studio also teaches Rodeo Swing and Modern Country Swing.
Beginner classes are designed for adults starting from zero. You can start with a single 50-minute Intro Class or a 3-hour Saturday Beginner Bootcamp, both of which lead into weekly Level 1 classes. No partner is needed — partner rotation is built into all classes and helps you adapt to different leads and follows. After introductory work, you progress through a structured syllabus with clear levels: Beginner Intro Series, then Level 1 and beyond.
Practice labs run weekly outside of classes — Country Swing Lab on Mondays at 9 PM and West Coast Swing Lab on Tuesdays at 9 PM — giving you extra reps and real social-floor comfort. WestieHive, the studio's Friday West Coast Swing social, happens on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. Beginner and Intermediate West Coast Swing classes start at 8:00 PM, with social dancing from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM. The studio also offers private wedding dance lessons, with Maria teaching first dance choreography for couples at any comfort level, from complete beginners to social dancers. Most couples need 6–12 private lessons and are advised to start 2–3 months before their wedding.
What to expect
Your first visit
Your first class will teach basic steps, rhythm, and lead-follow connection in a welcoming, no-pressure environment. Partner rotation happens during class so you learn with different partners. Classes are structured to roll beginners into either West Coast Swing or Country Swing Level 1 after your intro.
