Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is a choreographer whose repertory moves fluidly between intimate duets, ensemble abstraction, and full-length narrative ballets, joining classical technique with theatrical imagery and dramaturgical depth. Born in 1973 in Antwerp to Colombian and Belgian parents, she trained at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp. Her professional performing career included German companies, the Dutch jazz-dance company Djazzex beginning in 1993, and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam from 1997, where she danced as a soloist while developing choreography. In 2003 she ended her stage career to focus entirely on creation.

Early competition victories established her independent trajectory. *Clair/Obscur* won the Hannover Choreographic Competition in 2001, and *Replay* won at the Bornem choreographers' competition in 2002. The duet *Before After* brought her wider recognition in the United States after its 2006 appearance at Fall for Dance and subsequently entered multiple companies' repertories, demonstrating her gift for compressing theatrical relationships into formally controlled movement.

Lopez Ochoa's breakthrough into full-length narrative ballet came with *A Streetcar Named Desire*, created in 2012 with director Nancy Meckler for Scottish Ballet. The production received the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography and the 2013 South Bank Sky Arts Award for dance, proving that her practice could sustain character, period atmosphere, and theatrical pacing across an evening while integrating classical and contemporary movement vocabulary.

Her narrative repertory has expanded through sustained collaborations with Meckler, composer Peter Salem, and major European and international companies. *Broken Wings* (2016) for English National Ballet approached Frida Kahlo through biographical and surreal imagery. Dutch National Ballet commissioned the full-length *Frida* in 2020, with music by Salem, designs by Dieuweke van Reij, dramaturgy by Meckler, and a cast of 49 dancers; the production later toured to Los Angeles. Alongside these large-scale works, Lopez Ochoa has continued creating conceptual pieces and short commissions for companies across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.

Since 2019 she has directed the Contemporary Ballet Summer Program at Jacob's Pillow and received the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award that year. During pandemic closures she expanded into remote and screen-based creation, broadening the production formats within her practice. Her work is characterized by classical extension and partnering reshaped through grounded weight, articulated torsos, and abrupt shifts between intimacy and display; in narrative ballets, repeated gestures, ensemble tableaux, and designed imagery carry psychological and symbolic information without relying on mime.
