Biography
Melissa Barak was born and raised in Los Angeles, where she trained at Westside Ballet before moving to New York to study at the School of American Ballet. She joined New York City Ballet in 1998, where she danced until 2007 and became one of the company's youngest commissioned choreographers. Her early work in the Balanchine lineage set the foundation for a career spanning performance and authorship. In 2022, Barak became Los Angeles Ballet's first solo artistic director, returning to her home city to lead the company. In that role, she premiered her first full-length ballet, *Memoryhouse*, in 2023, marking a significant expansion into evening-length narrative work.
