Michael Nickerson-Rossi

Michael Nickerson-Rossi is a choreographer, educator, and arts advocate who founded Nickerson-Rossi Dance in 2011. His path into choreography began unexpectedly—while studying film, he documented a dance performance, an experience that redirected his artistic practice toward the stage. Since founding his company, Nickerson-Rossi has created original works presented throughout the United States and internationally, establishing himself as a maker of theatrical, emotionally driven dance rooted in narrative and storytelling.

Nickerson-Rossi's choreography explores recurring themes of identity, resilience, connection, and social awareness. His work is characterized by intricate movement, emotional freedom, and a commitment to telling stories through the body. Beyond creation, he has been central to expanding access to dance: he founded the education initiative uNdeRstanD, established the Palm Springs International Dance Festival, and created the Academy of Nickerson-Rossi Dance as a training ground for emerging artists.

At Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Conservatory, where he serves as a founding artistic director, Nickerson-Rossi teaches choreography and composition while continuing to present concert dance and dance films. His dual commitment to making work and teaching reflects a vision of dance as both an art form and a vehicle for community engagement and cultural dialogue.
