Biography
Peter Maxwell is a British ballroom and Latin dancer, choreographer, teacher and dance administrator whose career spans competitive championship performance, theatrical production and influential coaching across both Standard and Latin disciplines.
Maxwell began training in London at five years old. By age ten, he had formed a partnership with Lynn Harman that would last sixteen years and carry both dancers through junior, youth and amateur divisions in both Ballroom and Latin. The partnership achieved significant competitive success: they won the Professional World Latin championship in 1976, the British Open Professional Latin titles in 1976 and 1978, the British National Professional Latin championship in 1977, and the UK Open Professional Latin championship in 1977. Maxwell also reached finalist status in British Open Professional Ballroom competition, demonstrating unusual versatility across the two disciplines.
Following his work with Harman, Maxwell began a professional partnership with Vicki Regan in 1979. Together they moved beyond conventional competition into exhibitions and theatrical performance. Maxwell created Peter Maxwell's Ballroom Dance Theatre and the production *Dancing Nights*, which premiered in Japan in 1986. These works used ballroom vocabulary as staged theatre, featuring narrative tableaux, ensemble design, featured couples and musical transitions. Maxwell performed showdance with Regan at the World Professional Dance Championship in 1984.
As a pedagogue and coach, Maxwell founded Semley Dance Studio in London and became known for an unusual ability to develop world-class competitors across both Standard and Latin. He served in senior adjudication roles and was named an honorary advisor to the World DanceSport Federation in 2016. His teaching emphasizes the interdependence of feeling and technique rather than treating them as opposing values. Throughout his career, Maxwell has remained active as a lecturer and honored figure in dancesport.

Legacy & Impact
Maxwell's influence lies in his refusal of specialization. His competitive record joined Latin championship performance to serious Ballroom accomplishment; his coaching crossed Standard and Latin; and his theatrical work expanded ballroom beyond competition rounds into staged narrative and ensemble design. The result is a legacy distributed among partners, students, institutions and productions—a model of how technical mastery can feed both pedagogical depth and artistic creation.
