Rhapsody James

Rhapsody James is an American choreographer, creative director, master educator and photographer based in the commercial dance and music industries. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, James began dancing at seven and choreographing at sixteen. She studied at Purchase College before entering the music business through internships at record labels, which led to a position as an executive assistant at Sony Music. This early exposure to production dynamics shaped her understanding of how artists, labels, video directors and choreographers coordinate across projects.

James's professional work spans live performance, music video and artist development. She served as a lead choreographer for the New Jersey Nets Dance Team and appeared as a principal dancer in Busta Rhymes's "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See." Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she built a choreography practice working with major recording artists and live entertainment productions. Her work has been associated with performers including Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Chris Brown and Ariana Grande.

In 2010, James founded Motivating Excellence, an intensive training initiative that became central to her identity as an educator. The program combines choreography with professional discipline and mentorship, emphasizing rehearsal rigor, performance quality and the transition from class dancer to working artist. Documented performances from the program appeared at Choreographer's Carnival in 2012 and 2019, including her choreography for "Champagne Life."

Over more than twenty-five years, James has developed a multifaceted practice encompassing creative direction, teaching, photography and choreography. Her significance lies not only in commercial work but in formalizing a pedagogical pipeline for professional commercial dance at a moment when the field's knowledge was often transmitted informally through auditions, video sets and convention classes. This combination of production-side experience and structured mentorship has positioned her as a bridge between music-industry choreography and intensive professional education.
