Ronald Alan Cunningham

Ronald Alan Cunningham was a dancer, choreographer, artistic director and teacher whose career spanned classical ballet, modern dance and touring theatre. Born in Chicago in 1939, Cunningham came to ballet relatively late and built a significant presence across multiple companies and regions. In 1972, he joined Boston Ballet, where he became principal dancer, resident choreographer and founding director of Boston Ballet II by 1975. During his time there, he created more than twenty works, including *Cinderella*, establishing himself as a choreographer drawn to narrative clarity and classical forms. His *Cinderella* toured to the People's Republic of China in 1980 and was televised there to more than thirty million viewers, giving his work unprecedented international reach. In 1988, Cunningham accepted the position of artistic director at Sacramento Ballet, beginning a three-decade tenure that would define the company's development. Over these years, he created more than sixty ballets that were performed internationally. Beyond individual works, Cunningham's career was marked by sustained commitment to company-building and institutional leadership, establishing professional ballet infrastructure in the Sacramento region while expanding dance education and access to the art form.
