Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop

Frankie Manning, Cynthia R. Millman · Temple University Press · 2007 · Originally in English · introductory

Frankie Manning's memoir corrects the swing-only story of Savoy Ballroom dancing.

About the author

Frankie Manning (1914–2009) was a legendary Savoy Ballroom dancer and choreographer who helped define the Lindy Hop and the entire swing era. He danced at the Savoy from the late 1920s onward and was a founding member of the Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, the performance troupe that demonstrated swing to audiences worldwide. After decades away from dancing, Manning re-emerged in the 1980s swing revival as a cultural authority and teacher, mentoring new generations until his death. This memoir, compiled in his later years, represents one of the few sustained first-person accounts from the Savoy's core era.
