About this studio
TK Dance is a ballroom and Latin dance studio at 406 Moody Street in Waltham, Massachusetts, a few minutes from Newton, Watertown and Belmont and about twenty minutes west of Boston. It opened in 2024, when Tibor Kerekes left the SuperShag franchise he had co-owned for two decades and reopened the same floor under his own name.
Tibor brings an unusually deep competitive background to a neighbourhood studio. A Hungarian native, he danced with Hungary's National Formation Team before immigrating to the United States to teach at Fred Astaire. He reached the final of the Hungarian Grand Prix three times and the semi-final of the World Cup in 10-Dance, and he has now been teaching for more than twenty-five years. The studio describes its aim as the pursuit of ballroom excellence — a community where social grace meets competitive precision — and in practice that means the same technique that wins on a competition floor is taught to someone learning their first box step.
Instruction covers all four competitive syllabi. International Standard brings Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep; International Latin covers Samba, Cha Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive; American Smooth and American Rhythm add the social forms most often danced in the United States, including Bolero, Mambo and East Coast Swing. Lessons are available privately and in groups, for absolute beginners through competitive couples and pro-am students.
The studio runs evening social parties through the year — a group class at 8:15 PM followed by general dancing from 9:00 PM, at $20 in advance or $25 at the door — alongside seasonal events such as a Halloween costume party and a winter community showcase that is open to dancers from any studio. Printable flyers for the current season are listed further down this page.
The floor is also home to other people's nights, which makes TK Dance something of a hub for the western-suburbs scene. Alongside its own Friday ballroom socials, the studio hosts MI FIESTA, a social ballroom party on the second Friday of the month from 8:15 to 11 PM, and WESTIE EVOLUTION BOSTON, a West Coast Swing party on the third Saturday from 8 PM to midnight. The monthly group-class calendar carries technique and beginner sessions from a rotating roster of independent instructors who rent the room. Because those classes and parties are run by the individual instructors and promoters rather than by the studio, TK Dance notes that the schedule can change, and asks that questions about a particular class go to the instructor named on its flyer.
Three services sit alongside the teaching. Couples preparing a first dance can book wedding choreography and lessons. The ballroom is available for STUDIO RENTAL — a sprung wooden floor, mirrored wall and full sound system, useful for practice sessions, rehearsals, workshops and private events. And Tibor works as a professional DJ and MC, for weddings and functions as well as for dances at the studio, which is a rarer combination than it sounds: the person choosing the music is a ballroom professional who knows what a floor needs to keep dancing.
What to expect
Your first visit
No partner and no experience are needed. Ring-lit and mirrored, with a wooden floor and a bar along one side, the room is set up for social dancing rather than for a gym class. In a private lesson you work one-to-one at your own pace; in a group class you rotate partners and meet the rest of the room. At an evening party, arrive for the 8:15 PM group class if you would like a lesson first, or come at 9:00 PM for general dancing — $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Wear something you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole that will turn on wood; leather-soled shoes or ballroom shoes are ideal, and trainers are not. Because the group-class calendar carries sessions from independent instructors as well as the studio's own, check the current flyer or call ahead before travelling for a specific class.
Instructors
Who teaches here
TK Dance is owned and taught by Tibor Kerekes. A Hungarian native, he danced with Hungary's National Formation Team and immigrated to the United States to teach at Fred Astaire, later co-owning the SuperShag franchise for more than twenty years before opening TK Dance in 2024. His competitive record includes three Hungarian Grand Prix finals and a World Cup 10-Dance semi-final, and he has taught for over twenty-five years across social, wedding and competitive work. He also works professionally as a DJ and MC.
The studio's monthly calendar additionally carries group classes taught by a rotating roster of independent instructors who use the floor — technique sessions in Latin, rhythm and smooth, plus beginner classes and practice rounds. These are run by the instructors themselves rather than by the studio; the current calendar names who is teaching what.
New to dancing?
What beginners can expect
No partner, no experience and no dance shoes required — beginners are the studio's core audience rather than an afterthought. Group classes run at beginner level, private lessons move at whatever pace suits you, and the studio's evening parties open with an 8:15 PM group class specifically so that newcomers learn something before the social dancing starts at 9:00.
What to wear and bring
Before your first class
Dress code
Smart-casual is the norm — wear something you can move and turn in. Shoes matter more than clothes: you want a smooth sole that pivots on a wooden floor, so leather-soled shoes or proper ballroom shoes are ideal. Rubber-soled trainers grip the floor and make turning awkward, so they are best left at home. Dress up a little for the evening parties if you feel like it; plenty of people do, and nobody minds if you do not.
What to bring
Bring dance shoes if you own them, and a water bottle. Nothing else is needed — no partner, no equipment, and group classes rotate partners so you will not be left standing. For an evening party, bring payment for admission at the door.
Studio history
The room at 406 Moody Street was for many years the western outpost of the SuperShag franchise, and Tibor Kerekes was a co-owner of that business for over two decades. In 2024 he ended the franchise relationship and reopened the same floor as an independent studio under his own name. The continuity matters for anyone who danced there before: same address, same floor, same principal teacher — an independent business rather than a branch.
