About this studio

Black Pepper Swing is a swing dance school and social venue in central Helsinki, on the 4th floor of Karjalankatu 2. They have been in business since 2017 and have taught over 2,000 people to dance.

Classes run Monday to Thursday evenings, with offerings across multiple levels. Beginners can start with no experience and no partner needed — the studio guarantees you will learn to dance, and includes unlimited free re-takes of the beginners course. They teach both lead and follow roles. Classes span Lindy Hop at all levels (beginners, improvers, intermediate, intermediate-plus, technique-focused, rhythm and style, and fast variants), Balboa at beginner-plus and intermediate levels, and Solo Jazz & Charleston for beginners. There are also specialist sessions like Social Practice on Thursday evenings (17:00–19:00) and Social Chill classes. Beyond weekly classes, they run workshops with visiting teachers, theme classes, and weekend socials.

The studio occupies two separate spaces, each around 100m², both with sprung wooden dance floors. The front room has a brand new dance parquet, PA system with active speakers, mirrors, and a sofa area with a living-room feel. The back room offers a wider mirror wall, high-quality blackout curtains for sound and light control, and more privacy. Both rooms have good acoustics and natural light from multiple windows. The building also includes a kitchen with a French press, kettle, fridge-freezer, and basic utensils, plus a hang-out and dressing space.

Payment is flexible: you can pay by credit/debit card, invoice, cash, or benefit vouchers (Edenred, Smartum, ePassi). Single classes are 23€, a 4-week try-out is 88€, a 10-class card is 220€, and the full 18-week seasonal course is 359€. They offer a Dance Pass at 720€ for all-included access, plus theme classes, intensive training, and perks. You can join mid-season and pay only for remaining classes. If you miss a class, you can attend any other suitable group free of charge.

Events include regular social dances, international festivals, live music and late-night parties, and masterclasses. Notable events include the end-of-season party in May, summer workshops and masterclasses in June, and the Midnight Sun Swing Festival (July 3–5). The studio also rents out space to other dance and creative practitioners at hourly rates ranging from 15€ to 55€ depending on group size and booking type.
