About this studio
Culture Shock San Diego is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Hip Hop dance organization founded in 1993, and the originator of the worldwide Culture Shock International network. Based at 2110 Hancock Street in San Diego, the studio operates the Culture Shock Training Academy, offering drop-in classes for youth, teens, and adults at a variety of skill levels.
The Training Academy runs across three studios: Studio 1 (2300 sq ft, 55-dancer capacity), Studio 2 (1250 sq ft, 30-dancer capacity), and Studio 3 (915 sq ft, 18-dancer capacity). Classes run Monday 9am–12pm and 5pm–10pm, Tuesday–Thursday 5pm–10pm, Friday 9am–12pm and 5pm–9pm, and Saturday 9am–2:30pm. All classes are 55 minutes long. Each week features different choreography, so drop-in attendance works well for dancers with variable schedules. The studio accepts credit and debit cards (MC, VISA, Discover, AmEx), with online registration via cultureshocksandiego.pike13.com.
Beyond classes, Culture Shock runs several performance troupes: Future Shock San Diego, Mighty Shock San Diego, and Mini Shock San Diego. These troupes offer more intensive training and performance opportunities for dancers seeking to advance. The studio also hosts pop-up masterclasses with visiting choreographers and stages showcase events, including the Culture Shock International Choreographers Showcase held at venues like Mandeville Auditorium in La Jolla. Summer camps are offered seasonally.
The mission emphasizes community empowerment: "We are a troupe of individuals, who through the power of music and dance, cultivate self-worth, dignity, and respect FOR ALL PEOPLE." The studio walls feature work by internationally renowned graffiti artists. Private party classes are available for birthdays, bachelorette parties, and other occasions, tailored to any skill level. Financial aid at 50% off is available for qualifying students, and military discounts of 10% apply to drop-ins and class packages.
