Before your first class
Most classes welcome absolute beginners with no partner or prior experience required; Argentine tango and ballroom series are explicitly designed to progress quickly so you can join social dances.
For Argentine tango, wear comfortable clothes and shoes with non-rubber soles (leather or suede) for ease of pivoting.
Private lessons: $85/hour (single person), $400 for 5 lessons, $800 for 10 lessons; couples $100/hour, $450 for 5 lessons, $900 for 10; private group classes $20–$30 per person depending on group size.
About this studio
Dance Quarter occupies a historic firehouse building at 1719 Toledano St in uptown New Orleans, purchased and reconstructed in 2010 with original architectural elements preserved throughout. The space originally served as a firehouse, then an auto repair shop, residential housing, and a recording studio for local pianist Eddie Bo. You'll notice the original firehouse doors brought inside and refinished, shiplap using wood original to the building, and a pole in the lobby nodding to its past.
The studio operates four teaching spaces. Studio 1 offers natural light and unique aesthetic; Studio 2 has a specialized floor suited for tap and flamenco; Studio 3 features a traditional layout with ballet barre. The Firehouse Room (Studio 4) is the largest at 1,600 sq ft, equipped with professional sound system and customisable lighting, with capacity for approximately 100 people. A café sits directly outside Studio 4, available only as an add-on to Studio 4 rental. All studios have sprung wood floors.
Classes run in rotating series throughout the year: 8-week, 6-week, 5-week, and 4-week blocks, with drop-in options available. Dance Quarter offers Argentine tango (introduction and intermediate), Lindy Hop (fundamentals and intermediate/advanced), salsa on1 and on2, bachata, ballroom (East Coast Swing, American Tango, Rumba, Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha), blues dance fundamentals, Brazilian zouk, kizomba, samba, and Level Up (a choreographed fitness class). Private lessons are available at $85 for a single hour, with packages of 5 lessons for $400 or 10 for $800 (per person); couples pay $100 per hour, $450 for 5 lessons, or $900 for 10. Private group classes start at $30 per person for 3–5 people.
The studio hosts social events on Thursdays (8–11 pm), Fridays (8:30–11 pm), and Sundays (3 pm). Dances are beginner-friendly; Argentine tango and many ballroom classes require no partner and welcome absolute beginners. NOLA ReBelles, an all-female performance troupe celebrating 1920s French Cancan, 1960s go-go, and other eras of women's liberation, runs September to June with three sessions per year. The studio closes for Mardi Gras and operates on a structured schedule with class registration opening two weeks before each series starts.
