About this studio
Inlet Dance Theatre, founded in 2001 by Bill Wade, is one of Cleveland's leading professional contemporary dance companies rooted in American Modern Dance. The company's mission is to use dance to further people — creating and performing innovative dance theatre while fostering personal development through training and mentoring. Over its 24-year history, Inlet has grown from a small local company into an organisation with regional, national and international reach.
Inlet's technique foundations stem from three core pillars: Erick Hawkins-based release technique (modern classes that begin seated on the floor, progressing to standing centre work and combinations across the floor), Alison Chase/Pilobolus-based nontraditional partnering (a weight-sharing technique teaching weight into center, weight away from center, morphing, and lean-becomes-lift), and structured improvisation (using structures like NEWS, stationary and travelling lines, and sculptures). Classes are taught by the professional dancers of Inlet Dance Theatre and link to National Standards of Dance Education and Ohio Department of Education Dance Standards.
The studio operates from the Pivot Center in the Clark-Fulton neighbourhood at 2937 West 25th St, Cleveland, OH 44113. Drop-in morning technique classes run Monday–Friday, 9am–10:30am (Erick Hawkins technique) and Tuesday 10:30am–12pm (ballet technique) for intermediate to advanced dancers aged 18 and up, at $15 per class or $130 for a 10-class card. During summer (June 29–July 17, 2026), open-level drop-in classes are offered at the same times, with a second session 10:30am–12pm rotating between nontraditional partnering and collaborative performance improvisation. The Summer Dance Intensive (June 24–July 26, 2026) is the preeminent professional summer programme, welcoming students ages 16 to professional in a full-time immersive environment (Mon–Fri, 9am–4pm) with morning drop-in options. Children's and teen classes resume in fall 2026, designed to be developmentally appropriate and combining modern dance techniques with creative problem-solving.
Inlet also hosts classes taught by partner organisations: Djapo Cultural Arts Institute offers African Dance & Drum classes (club and street styles on Mondays 6:30–8pm, West African dance on Wednesdays 6:30–8pm, and beginning West African drum on Saturdays 11am–12pm, with beginning West African dance on Saturdays 12pm–1:30pm), and Pacific Paradise Entertainment offers beginner and intermediate/advanced Hula/Tahitian classes for all ages on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6–7pm.
Beyond education, Inlet maintains an active performance calendar presenting works at Cleveland Public Theatre's DanceWorks Series, Playhouse Square, Cain Park Evans Amphitheater, and other venues, with an upcoming 25th Anniversary performance at Cain Park in July 2026. The company conducts national touring and has participated in international artistic exchanges, including a two-week residency exchange to Easter Island. The studio also operates The Estuary at Inlet Dance Theatre, a 3,375 sq ft event, performing arts and filming venue within the Pivot Center's former Astrup Awning factory, available for corporate events, art exhibitions, performances, workshops and private celebrations.
