About this studio
King Slocombe School of Dance has been Cambridge's oldest and most prestigious dance school since its founding in 1940 by Miss Betty King and Miss Edna Slocombe. The school occupies a distinctive Edwardian townhouse at 8 Emmanuel Road, moments from the historic city centre, the Grafton Shopping Centre and Grand Arcade, and one minute from Drummer Street Bus Station with excellent car parks nearby.
Under the leadership of Principal Donna Buchanan, the school maintains the traditional values established by its founders and Tina Pilgrim, combined with high standards of tuition and personal development in a family atmosphere. The teaching team comprises experienced and well-qualified RAD and ISTD teachers and choreographers, many of whom are examiners in their own right with years of professional dance experience between them.
Ballet forms the strong foundation of the school's curriculum, as the best basis on which to build any dance technique. Classes cover Ballet, Modern Theatre Dance and Tap following ISTD syllabi, with the entire range from Primary to Advanced 2 available in both faculties. Jazz awards are entered at regular intervals when appropriate. Contemporary Dance can be added in the Middle School and Student sectors.
Many pupils obtain the very highest grades in RAD and ISTD exams. The school has an enviable reputation for reaching the highest possible standards in exam-level dance classes, and a large number of pupils now successfully perform in the West End, on Broadway, on television and in locations worldwide. Students who graduate often go on to study contemporary dance and other forms further.
