About this studio
Northwest Dance Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Seattle dedicated to non-competitive social dance. Their mission is to inspire the art and joy of social dancing and build skills, coordination and confidence in a safe, welcoming environment for dancers of all abilities.
They teach a wide range of partner dance styles across beginning and intermediate levels: East Coast Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot, Nightclub Two-Step, Country Two-Step, Salsa, Bachata, Rumba, Blues, One Step, Slow Lindy, West Coast Swing, Tango, Zydeco and Balboa. Classes run at Sunset Hill Community Hall (3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle 98117) as both series (typically 5 weeks) and stand-alone workshops. Classes cap at 34 students — 17 leads and 17 follows — and partners rotate frequently so you dance with many people throughout a session.
They host monthly live music dances at The Leif Erikson Hall in Ballard featuring local bands, with an intimate setting of round tables and soft lighting designed to encourage meeting and mingling. These events include one-hour pre-dance lessons in rotating styles taught by various instructors, allowing newcomers to learn steps before the social dance. Admission to most dances is sold at the door; cash or check accepted.
Beyond their regular classes and dances, NW Dance runs Seabeck Dance Camp, an all-inclusive four-day dance retreat at Seabeck Conference Center that includes accommodation, meals, instruction and live music dances. They also have a volunteer programme called Dancing for the Ages, which brings social dance to seniors in retirement homes around the Puget Sound area. Instructors include Jodi Fleischman, Taylor Winningham, Sean Donovan, Jen Workman, Guy Caridi and Nancy Fry — all trained dance teachers focused on non-competitive instruction in both lead and follow roles.
What to expect
Your first visit
Drop in solo or with a partner to a 55-minute class of mixed observation and practice, with frequent partner rotation. Teaching assistants are available in most beginning-level classes. Classes feel cool at first but warm up quickly as you dance; instructors teach in teams of two, demonstrating steps and moves while you learn by doing.
