About this studio
Richmond Academy of Ballet is a classical ballet studio founded in September 2020 by a married couple of former professional dancers. The school began in a basement with three socially-distanced students and moved to its permanent home at 413-C Branchway Road in April 2021, near Chesterfield Towne Center. The studio's mission is to inspire each generation to see more beauty in the world and find their own contribution to it.
The school teaches ballet across five age-based levels, from First Steps (ages 3–6) through Upper Levels and Conservatory (ages 11 and up). First Steps classes use gentle exercises, imaginative movement, and play to teach spatial awareness, rhythm, balance, and coordination alongside early ballet terminology. Conservatory Prep and Youth classes (ages 7–12) become more focused and challenging, introducing Contemporary Dance and building strength and flexibility. Upper Levels and Conservatory classes (ages 11 and up) offer pre-professional training with gradual introduction to pointe work for students seeking high-level ballet education.
Adult classes are available in Beginning Ballet (Wednesdays 8:00–9:00 pm) and Beginning Jazz (Thursdays 7:45–8:45 pm). A four-week session costs $79 for four classes or $148 for all eight classes combined.
The studio runs extensive summer programming including Story Book Ballet Camp (ages 3–5, Monday–Friday 9:00 am–12:00 pm), Ballet Arts Camp (ages 6–10, Monday–Friday 9:00 am–2:00 pm), and multiple pre-professional and contemporary intensives for advancing dancers. Evening classes run six weeks from June 8 to July 16. New advanced students are required to take a placement class.
Performance opportunities are central to the curriculum: the school produces a Conservatory Show, annual Nutcracker productions, and large works including Moonfire, Jewel, Archetypes, Tale of the Bayou, Orpheus, The Return, Peter and the Wolf, and Madeline. The school also hosts the 5th Annual Wine. Art. Music. Dance. Festival in collaboration with Interwoven Arts VA, a community arts event featuring live music, dance performances, visual art, wine tasting, and local artists. The studio is planning an international trip to Paris in 2026, where students will study with Parisian ballet masters, learn new choreography, and perform.
