About this studio
Solid Ground Movement is a hiphop dance school and cultural foundation based at IJpromenade 2 in Amsterdam's Tolhuistuin. Founded in 2004 by Alida Dors and Bryan Druiventak, both deeply rooted in the hiphop scene since childhood, the studio has spent over 20 years building Amsterdam's hiphop community. What started with a focus on theatrical hiphop has grown into a multi-faceted space where dancers train, makers create, and communities build together.
The studio offers classes in three distinct styles: Hiphop (taught by Rachnella, Wednesday), Breaking (taught by Steve "Popski" Lobo, Wednesday), and Hiphop Theater (taught by Thomas, Wednesday). Classes are designed for children aged 6 and up through to adults, with an emphasis on expression, creativity and discipline rather than perfection. Hiphop classes focus on movement and creative growth in an inclusive environment. Breaking, one of the original elements of hiphop culture, demands strength and respect for the craft. Hiphop Theater combines dance with storytelling, performance and stage presence for dancers with ambition.
Beyond regular classes, Solid Ground Movement runs a Talent Development programme called Solid Pro, aimed at serious dancers aged 18–25 interested in hiphop and theatre. Participants work with professional choreographers and makers, developing technique, performance, musicality and stage presence, with opportunities to perform on stage and gain commercial and theatre experience. The school has a track record: Henry O'Tawiah, now Artistic Director and Educational Programme Lead, won the world-famous "Juste Debout Netherlands" competition in 2009/10 and represented his country in Paris, becoming known as one of the most versatile street dance choreographers internationally before turning to theatre-making.
The studio rents out three distinct spaces to dancers, makers and performing arts professionals. The Waterstudio (98 square metres) overlooks the dynamic surroundings of Tolhuistuin and costs €35 for the first hour, €25 for the second, and €20 from the third hour onwards. The Spiegelstudio (95 square metres) features full-wall mirrors and offers the same pricing. The Jagerstudio (52 square metres) has a wide mirror wall and a wooden floor requiring flat-soled shoes; it costs €17.50 for the first hour and €15 from the second hour. All three spaces include a clean dance floor, stereo with aux cable, and access to kitchen facilities. Rentals are available hourly, short-term or long-term depending on availability.
Solid Ground Movement is structured as a foundation (stichting) with a mission rooted in inclusivity and cultural respect. The team includes founder and Artistic Director Bryan Druiventak, Artistic Director and Educational Programme Lead Henry O'Tawiah, Business Manager Ger Jager, Studio Planning coordinator Verena Verstraate, and PR & Marketing lead Kamar Marouan. The school also offers guidance classes led by Naomi Klein. The organisation believes hiphop dance is both cultural expression and a powerful tool for social cohesion, and aims to be "the knowledge desk where dancers and choreographers can delve into the techniques and rich history of hiphop dance."
