Stampij Jazz Dance Club

Stampij is a jazz dance club in Amsterdam Noord dedicated to swing dances and blues. The club focuses on Lindy Hop, Solo Jazz, and Blues dancing, styles that grew out of Black American cultural traditions. They also explore related styles like House dancing. Their mission centres on jazz as a living, evolving tradition—not a relic of the past—and they believe dance is about individuality, improvisation, and personal style.

Classes run in 7-week blocks, with options to join as a drop-in for some sessions. They teach at all levels, from absolute beginners to experienced dancers. The team consists of experienced dancers with national and international backgrounds; Sarah and Theodoor, who lead the Crash Course in Lindy Hop for absolute beginners, have each been dancing Lindy Hop for about 10 years and focus on creating a fun, comfortable dance experience. The club encourages everyone to try both lead and follow roles, seeing dance as a conversation between partners where both bring ideas and creativity.

Stampij runs weekly swing and blues classes and open practice sessions. They also offer workshops and events—for example, a 3.5-hour Crash Course in Lindy Hop for absolute beginners where you learn basic steps, partner dancing, at least 5+ moves, solo jazz elements, and Lindy Hop culture and history. The team is available for dance performances, open classes, and on-screen collaborations.

The club's name comes from the Dutch word "stampij" meaning "herrie maken"—making joyful noise—echoing both the stampede on the dance floor and Fletcher Henderson's "The Stampede." They are committed to welcoming dancers of all races, ethnicities, ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, body types, abilities, and economic situations. No classes run during week 18 & 22 (April 27/28 & May 25/26) and week 9 (February 23 & 24).

You'll join weekly classes in swing and blues rooted in Black American jazz traditions. Whether you're a first-timer or experienced dancer, there's something for you. The team aims to give personal attention in classes focused on enjoyment, exploration, and developing your own style. Drop-in options are available for some sessions.

The teaching team includes Sarah, Mike, Claudia, Theodoor, Collin, Effie, Paddy, and Elif—experienced dancers with national and international backgrounds. Sarah and Theodoor, both with about 10 years of Lindy Hop experience, lead the Crash Course for beginners and focus on creating fun, comfortable dance experiences.

The club explicitly welcomes absolute beginners alongside experienced dancers, with dedicated crash courses and drop-in options for those new to swing and blues.
