About this studio
Sonora Latin Dance teaches four distinct Latin styles across beginner, pre-intermediate and intermediate levels. The core offerings are Salsa On1 (LA style) and Bachata, with open-level Salsa Caleña—described as lightning-fast footwork and the high-energy spirit of Cali, Colombia's salsa capital—and Salsa Choke, urban Colombian grooves from Cartagena with playful footwork and infectious group moves. Classes run Monday to Thursday at Dance Code, 618 36 Ave NE, in sessions lasting one hour each.
The teaching model is built explicitly for beginners. Level 1 classes (Monday) start with zero experience needed and teach the foundations: timing, the basic step and first turns. Level 1.5 (Tuesday) moves into combinations, partnerwork and styling to build dance vocabulary with confidence and flow. Level 2 (Thursday) elevates combinations, partnerwork and styling to fine-tune body movement and basics. A dedicated Salsa Bodywork class on Thursday at open level focuses on body-movement foundation.
Most series run in 4-week blocks; beginner series run 8 weeks. Partners rotate every class, so you'll learn to dance with everyone and no partner is needed. The studio reports 200+ dancers a year and emphasises weekly socials with live DJs where beginners feel social-floor ready after just a few weeks of structured classes. Instructors named in reviews include Ashley, Juan, Christian and Vickki, described as patient, talented, passionate and engaged.
Pricing is flexible: a single drop-in is $25; a one-style 4-week series (4 classes) is $93; a two-style 4-week combo series (8 classes) is $142; the 8-week beginner series (16 classes: 8 Salsa On1 + 8 Bachata) is $170 (just over $10 per class); a single 8-week series is $120; and an all-access pass for every class, every night Monday to Thursday across all four styles for 4 weeks is $190.
The studio describes its ethos as community-focused: no egos, no pressure, just music, movement and a room full of people cheering you on. Most beginners join solo, which is completely normal. Classes began August 10.
